Love and War North South John Jakes Books

While I liked North and South I liked this book so much better. I felt the book was more developed as a whole. As one who did not pay attention in school while studying The Civil War I have really enjoyed reading these books. I never knew how torn people in the country were regarding the war and slavery. I also did not realize that President Lincoln had a darker side to him as well. I'm not going to give a lot away here but I felt this book actually took you through the war itself. You felt the hope, despair, hatred along with all the characters. As far as the Main and Hazard Families I felt a lot more took place between these characters as well as between the families than in North and South. Over all it was a great book. I really could not put it down and when I did I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Looking forward to the last book of the trilogy.

Love and War North South John Jakes Books Reviews

This author is well researched on the Civil War era and uniquely gifted in weaving captivating stories to emphasize the immense and tragic human impact of this war. Though the evil of his villains seemed a bit much at times, they served to underscore the demons that were often unleashed in, both, the north and the south. The complicated, occasional weakness of the author's protagonists accentuated the stress and turmoil with which they were contending. Jakes allows no room for the reader to think about war being impersonal. Instead, several of his characters experience suffering and triumph that make this novel a page turner.
This is the second book in the civil war trilogy. It covers the civil war but does not detail the battles. I was grateful for that. I've read too many civil war era books that focus on battles and lose the story in the process. If you want battle details and strategies, read a different book. This one covers the two families, the Mains of South Carolina and the Hazards of Pennsylvania. While the families have been friends for a very long time, the war puts them on opposite sides and creates a lot of difficulty. However, friendship is often stronger than political views and we see that when one family arranges to rescue another family member being held captive in a southern prison. Rather than focusing on battles, you actually get a glimpse of life during the war. Very heart breaking at times. I'd recommend to anyone who has read the first book in the series.
The North and South Trilogy comprises the books "North and South", "Love and War" and "Heaven and Hell". It is in its entirety, in my opinion, perhaps the finest fictionalised account of the American Civil War ever written. The books look back to the years preceding the hostilities and cover the build up to the war and the conflict and its consequences in terms of the death and destruction, the medical services, the logistics of the war effort, the politics of international relationships, the blockades and the day to day lives of those involved. The history is impeccable and the story is marvellously well plotted and convincingly real and the reader feels totally involved with the families of the Mains and Hazards. It is necessary to read all three and to read them in chronological order and the reward for so doing is wonderful entertainment and fascinating history. "Love and War" covers the actual war years and for the Civil War buff couldn't be bettered. It is just a rich experience and an extremely readable book.
This is truly an fascinating and attention keeping trilogy - but it's not an easy read. I had to take a 'break' between Part One and Two - and am doing the same now before tackling Part Three. The characters are intriguing - however, I found 'Love and War' difficult as far as the detailed descriptions of some of the absolute horrors committed (on both sides) during the Civil War - but I'd recommend it to anyone who's seeking a serious, detailed, lengthy - yet entertaining read.
On the whole, I have to say I enjoyed this one, a lot more than I did the first one. Especially, since it shows a lot of what went on on the battlefront and on the homefront, with the latter illustrating just how much politicking went on and played a part in, and the effects thereof, on both sides. Again this was very well-written and I am definitely looking forward to reading the final installment, in a trilogy, that to be honest I'd never thought I'd read, much less, come to love, but I have.
This is by far one of the best books with the Civil War as the backdrop that I have ever read. I finished the first in the trilogy and started immediately on this, the second in the trilogy. It clocks in at over 1000 pages but time flew by as I read about the Hazards of Pennsylvania and the Mains of South Carolina.

The first shots are fired in Charleston, South Carolina and it has the families both sending members off to war. The inevitable has happened and Billy Hazard joins up with the Union and Charles joins the Confederacy. However, Billy and Charles manage to remain friends even though they will not see one another for some time. However, when Billy is sent to Libby prison, he will meet up with Charles again. I don't want to give too much away here but it had me on pins and needles the entire time.

There are so many memorable moments in this book that I can't begin to write all of them down. Charles and his horse on their last ride together; Charles' rescue of Billy on several occasions; Virgilia and Ashton's absolute villainy; Orry and Madeline's great love, Charles parting with Augusta because he fears his death might hurt her too much; the list goes on and on and John Jakes writes about all of these so masterfully that I did not want this book to end.

John Jakes has written masterpieces in "North and South" and "Love and War". The fact that at over 1000 pages I did not want the end to come is testament to that. The sorrow of lost love, the elation of love found, the horror of man's inhumanity to man and the tragedy of war are stunningly told in Love and War. A truly stunning achievement.
While I liked North and South I liked this book so much better. I felt the book was more developed as a whole. As one who did not pay attention in school while studying The Civil War I have really enjoyed reading these books. I never knew how torn people in the country were regarding the war and slavery.
