I am a fan of Bolt’s spare and humorous writing and enjoyed his more historical books so I was was eager to get my hands on a copy of The Lonely Graves and curious to see how he would write something more entertaining and low brow.
A detective novel set in Amsterdam. The Lonely Funerals team organizes funeral ceremonies with flowers, coffee and poetry for the unknown corpses found in the city. A young Moroccan found drowned in one of the city’s canal gives director Pieter Posthumus a nagging feeling. He starts asking questions and soon finds the police are working on exposing the “Amsterdam Cell,” a group that is planning terrorist attacks.
I raced through to the surprising ending and now have that bereft feeling one gets after reading a truly absorbing book. Pieter Posthumus is a wonderful new character who may well become one of the great detective heroes of our time like Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallender or PD James’ Adam Dagleish or Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley. Posthumus has some of the same qualities wistful humanity, kindness and a gentle touch of lonely outsiderness. His colleagues are just as appealing--Britta Bolt has created a collegial cast of characters in an entirely credible Amsterdam setting. I enjoyed the references to cheese sandwiches, apple tart, Sunday afternoon coffee and bicycles and people falling into the canals. Against this backdrop, the plot moves quickly. The Dutch police are watching a group of disaffected immigrants and trying to make sure they don’t commit any terrorists acts. But the story is told with compassion and humor and plenty of family drama and understanding makes this a universally appealing yarn. I can’t wait for the next installment.
